Convening Conference day 2 - “Wake Up and Stay Awake”

“We need to wake up, and stay awake,” admonished Rev. Heather Sims to begin an historic day in the Eastern Texas Conference. Over 250 clergy, lay representatives from the over 250 GMC congregations across east Texas and Louisiana, as well as many guests joined together for the inaugural business session of the Eastern Texas Conference. It was a day of new beginnings and renewal that ended in a celebration of Communion for the first time as a Global Methodist Church conference.

One new offering at this Convening Conference was a time of learning as we gathered for workshops taught by leading scholars, pastors, and even Bishop Mark Webb, one of the two episcopal leaders of the Global Methodist Church. Workshops included sessions on evangelism, small group discipleship, the new GMC catechism, social witness, and worship.

Among the day’s historic highlights was the welcoming of 90 ordinands into the conference. Driving the size of this class was the inclusion of many former United Methodist Local Pastors, who qualified for full ordination as deacons or elders in the Global Methodist Church. This is believed to be the largest single class of ordinands in the history of the Methodist movement.

The evening worship focused on the leadership of the laity whom led the way in guiding churches through disaffiliation and joining the GMC. It was a celebration of the continued strength of the laity, many of whom have also led the way in launching seven new GMC congregations already in the Eastern Texas Conference.

The Eastern Texas Conference encompasses over 250 Global Methodist Church congregations served by over 250 clergy throughout east Texas and Louisiana. To find a congregation or to learn more, visit etxgmc.org
